Mark Scott (ABC) on social media leadership

“Social Media is already happening to you” :- Mark Scott, Managing Director ABC 24th June, Darwin Convention Centre

In a brilliant speech this morning to heads of government departments and CEO s, Mark Scott, successfully articulated the important role social media is playing in the lives of many Territorians. Creative Territory (one of the organizers of the event) Director, Tracy Jones in her welcome speech, stated that approximately 3500 Territorians use Twitter and 50,000 plus are on Facebook. As the numbers already show, it is high time that we get our content out to where the people are along publishing more sophisticated web sites with high usability and accessibility to attract consumers.

In his speech Mark Scott, took us back in time to when the newspaper and radio were our sources of information, and the New York Times was filtered by an editor in Sydney before anyone in Australia can read snippets of it. Today, we can read the New York Times, direct from the source.

Recently, I took great comfort from my fellow Tweeps living around the northern suburbs of Darwin, to keep me informed during Cyclone Carlos (February 2011) complimenting other credible news sources,  when a huge tree took down our fence and blocked access to our street.

Quotes from  Mark’s speech:

“The world media has opened up and there are now thousands of radio and news stations”.

” The nature of the media relationship has changed. There were experts and they created information that we consumed. This is no longer the case. Media is a two-way experience.”

“Young people create, consume and share media. Social Networking embodies this”

“ABC is thinking 10 years ahead about what the media scene will look like”

” 10 years ago none of us expected the coming of Social Media”

“Online hasnt killed TV and neither has TV killed radio. Instead, everyone is more connected to MEDIA.”

” Do not Tweet when you have been drinking”
